DESIGNING YOUR KITCHEN:
MOST COMMON LAYOUTS

The kitchen is another VERY IMPORTANT and busy part of most homes. It’s a place where food is prepared, men can’t find the ketchup on the top shelf, front and center, and people gather to eat and visit.

As we previously discussed in our Living Area posts, great rooms with Kitchens being a part of a large room layout, are very popular. However, you do have options for how your kitchen is laid out, and we are going to discuss some of those options in this article.

Below are the three main kitchen layouts we are going to discuss:

  • Single Wall Layout
  • L-Shaped Layout
  • U-Shaped Layout

SINGLE WALL LAYOUT:

This layout has all of the kitchen cabinets and appliances along a SINGLE WALL, or as part of the island. Cabinetry and counter space in this layout is minimal with the kitchen being open to the living and dining areas. However, additional counter and storage space can be designed as part of a pantry, or scullery.

L-SHAPED LAYOUT:

An L-Shaped Kitchen utilizes 2 WALLS for the counters and appliances. This layout also generally utilizes an island for additional counter space and a seating area. While this layout provides more counter and storage space in the kitchen, it also keeps the kitchen open to the living and dining areas.

U-SHAPED LAYOUT:

U-Shaped layouts tend to have a cozier feel and offer more counter and storage space. This layout utilizes 3 WALLS for cabinets and appliances, and often has an island in the center. While one side of the kitchen is open to the rest of the house, this layout offers a bit more separation.
